A Brief History of Cannabis Prohibition

In 1912 cannabis was made illegal in Uk(including Ireland at the time) because it was making bonded servants(slaves?) lathergic/lazy?

Why is marijuana illegal? Why is it not called by it's proper name of cannabis hemp? In the
1930's, a new machine was invented that made it much cheaper to use the pulp from the
cannabis hemp plant. This threatened the profits of an extremely wealthy American business man, William Randolph Hearst from his forest paper pulp business and the Du Pont company from their bleaching and plastic making chemical processes. They teamed up with
Harry Anslinger in the U.S government and invented marijuana out of whole cloth. Hearst's
many newspapers ran made up stories about the harms of this "evil weed", and those stories
were used as evidence in U.S congress to pass a new tax on marijuana. The politicians who
voted for this legislation didn't even realize that marijuana was the same as cannabis hemp that
they were using in huge quantities in their states.

This disgusting lie started cannabis prohibition industry. Prohibition has continued based on
more lies. There is not a shred of truth in any of it! In fact smoking or eating cannabis is in
comparison to many legal drugs harmless. In the history of humankind no one has ever died from a cannabis overdose. In many ways, cannabis is safer than alcohol, tobacco and prescribed drugs. Not only that, cannabis hemp has a lot of important industrial and medical uses. It makes cheaper and better paper than trees, it can be used to make building materials, you can burn the seed oil as fuel and eat it on your salad or in your baking. The
seeds are a complete protein on a par with or better than soy as a vegetable source of protein. Cannabis is also the best known medicine for treating nausea caused by drugs to treat cancer or aids. It not only eliminates the nausea completely, it restores the appetite. And the list goes on. We have only scratched the surface of it's uses.

By any rational standard, cannabis should be available over the counter, in bulk in your local health food store for a reasonable price.

So who are the criminals here?

The criminals are the people who make and enforce these stupid laws, the politicians, the judges and the gardai. They are all guilty of holding back a very useful plant that does a hell of a lot more good than it does bad.

The cannabis hemp plant can be a real solution to the dependence we have on oil and should be taken seriously as a real alternative.

Free the weed and help make prohibition history.
It's in your hands!

Hi,
While I am behind the campaign for the legalisation of cannabis 100% I feel I must comment on your arguement.
Just as a case in point you write... "In every way, cannabis is safer than alcohol, tobacco and prescribed drugs." This statement, even when taken in context is not true. Sadly, over-stating one's case is a flaw in many pro-legalisation arguements and is comparable to the scaremongering tactics used by politicians and others to keep prohibition in place. Our aim should be to educate with the facts let them speak for themselves and not to debase one set of lies with their analogue. It cheapens our positions. Anyhow.... rant over... Free The Weed! Peace Out Dudes

I believe if it was legal, then any users would have the choise to buy top grade smoke and at least know they are not putting poisons into their systems. The Irish government and others, need to take a leaft from our good friends in Holland (on smoking laws).
At least you can pick from menus what type of high you require depending on what you want to feel like. I've spoken to many many smokers over the years, many people can deal with smoking and goign about their every day lifes and even during work breaks, a great memory was me and my mate in holland outside the rockery caffee as we shared a mild smoke with a rasta business man on his lunch break.
You can't do that here in ireland, i've never met a smoker who had a bad word to say, only intelectual conversations. I am agenst alcahol for many reasons some family and some personal, i choose not to get drunk for the effects it has on me and people around me, they say it's a socable thing to have a drink, it can be, but most of the time i'd prefer to stay away from people that are drinking, unless sharing a few with friends.
I've been spat on and acused of all sorts as a kid, they even gave me seven months as a kid or possesing a small amound of canabis, thankfully my family were able to bail me, but it showed me that the judge really was agenst drugs and close minded and just tryed to fresk me out as a first offender, that's how i saw it.
In holland i could have purchased this same amount in a legal herb store or caffee.
In moderation cannabis can be enjoyed and it's more natural than taking any tablets or whatever for ilnesses, in moderation. With respects to the ones that can be emune to its effects, it does effect more than others, which is why we need it legalised so we have the choise to obtain clean strains of various strengths, effects for whatever mood.

I think it's really shamefull that bars here have a licanse to full young people with alcahon, especially the younger ones as in students, it's a shame to see that bars can decide o do happy hours or even stick up posters that they are offering shots of spirits, chcktails etc to young people for as little as 1euro or less and the obvious reaction to anybody out on a session is to get as many drink is as they can take, can you imagen the rest, when they throw them out onto the streets?
Would it be the same if people had the choise to buy their smoke in legal establishments?
I do not think so..
I feel steriotyped ever since i was a kid, it's not fair, most smokers chose to smoke in a peaceful environment.
Give us the choise to make up our own minds as you have with alcaholism, we need legal stores supplying legal drugs.
Help our country distroy the street dealers and cut down on the crime rate and importation of illegal drugs.
The people behind the illegal trade are raking in money for dirt and damaging peoples's healths,
That will never stop unless we make it legal and have everything tested.
I know soo many folks that could and have benifited from a small amound of cannabis.
But because of our laws, they are addicted to tablets or whatever medications.
At the moment you can buy legal herb in the stores in ireland and they are far more distructive to your mind
than any of the filth that can be bought on the streets, which is why we should stop this also and legalise the natural herb.
They are putting psychotics into legal herb, which can mess your mind up.

Everyone talks about the history of American prohibition, but what is the history of Cannabis Prohibition in Ireland?

The article briefly mentions the uk prohibition in 1912, but does anyone have any more detail of the reasons for this prohibition, or any other details.

Did the Irish government keep the prohibition once the free state was formed, even if it was originally introduced in the UK to keep the Irish working classes in check?
